Oh My Aching Head!

Did you know that women are more likely to have migraines than men?  18% of women as compared with 6% of men…have these recurring, severe headaches accompanied by sensitivity to light, sound and/or movement.    Many people experience nausea and vomiting with migraines but doesn’t occur with everyone.

A lot of people who suffer from migraines don’t even know that they are having them–they call them “sick headaches” or “sinus headaches.”   People may suffer from migraines for years and not realize that the horrible headaches they have to go to bed for are migraine headaches.

Migraines are complicated, representing a process of changes involving neurotransmitters, inflammatory proteins, the trigeminal nerve, the brain cortex and brainstem, as wellas the connections in-between.

You may not know this but you may be increasing the frequency and severity of your migraines by taking Advil or Excedrin-Migraine frequently.  If you are experiencing severe headaches on a recurrent basis you need to talk to you doctor and try to find a headache specialist.

Keeping a calendar of your headaches is important part of helping yourself to health.  Write down what has triggered your headache …it could be fatigue, stress or even a strong smell.  Rate the severity on a 1 to 3 scale 1 the least and 3 the worst.  Try to note the length of the headache and what you took to help.
