Why are we so afraid?“Be careful….” I am warned when I tell someone that I’ve become an uppity woman since I’ve turned 50. Perhaps I need to take heed. After all, we have a very very small safety net available to our family as both of us are unemployed and using up savings at a record pace. But I believe in standing up for my family. I can’t stand people in power using that power to be disrespectful to others. The classroom is used in this way so often. Even with adults attempting to retool to go back into industry, teachers who should be working to get these adults ready to work use scare tactics. For example, I am acquainted with a teacher who got in front of the classroom and said (and this is a direct quote) “I am the only A–H— allowed in this room,” and then he proceeded to be one. I have called up the academic hierarchy to find out how to deal with this teacher and I’ve been told to “Be careful….” Why? Why do we allow bullies to use these tactics in higher education when we are working to rid elementary schools and high schools of bullies? I think that the disrespectful, bullying behavior that we see in our Representatives who yell slurs at the President of the United States during a Special Session of Congress is part of the problem. If we allow bullies in the House of Representatives and on television and radio yell and curse and hurl slurs at us then no wonder so many of us are afraid. Don’t you think we should try to enforce rules of civility in the classroom, on television and radio and in our Government too so that we don’t have to worry about this? But I may be missing the point of the warning…perhaps I am tangling with “powerful” people. GUESS WHAT??? I’m going to bet my FAITH against any “power” that they believe that they have and know that I am protected. Singing “ANGELS WATCHING OVER ME…” 1 comment to Why are we so afraid? |
